    dissertation3D reconstruction from image pairs relies on finding corresponding points between images and using the corresponding points to estimate a dense disparity map. Today's correspondence-finding algorithms primarily use image features or pixel intensities common between image pairs. Some 3D computer vision applications, however, don't produce the desired results using correspondences derived from image features or pixel intensities. Two examples are the multimodal camera rig and the center region of a coaxial camera rig. Additionally, traditional stereo correspondence-finding techniques which use image features or pixel intensities sometimes produce inaccurate results. This thesis presents a novel image correspondence-finding technique that aligns pairs of image sequences using the optical flow fields. The optical flow fields provide information about the structure and motion of the scene which is not available in still images, but which can be used to align images taken from different camera positions. The method applies to applications where there is inherent motion between the camera rig and the scene and where the scene has enough visual texture to produce optical flow. We apply the technique to a traditional binocular stereo rig consisting of an RGB/IR camera pair and to a coaxial camera rig. We present results for synthetic flow fields and for real images sequences with accuracy metrics and reconstructed depth maps

    Active architecture for pervasive contextual services

    Pervasive services may be defined as services that are available to any client (anytime, anywhere). Here we focus on the software and network infrastructure required to support pervasive contextual services operating over a wide area. One of the key requirements is a matching service capable of assimilating and filtering information from various sources and determining matches relevant to those services. We consider some of the challenges in engineering a globally distributed matching service that is scalable, manageable, and able to evolve incrementally as usage patterns, data formats, services, network topologies and deployment technologies change. We outline an approach based on the use of a peer-to-peer architecture to distribute user events and data, and to support the deployment and evolution of the infrastructure itself

    Evolution of the Stellar Mass--Metallicity Relation - I: Galaxies in the z~0.4 Cluster Cl0024

    We present the stellar mass-stellar metallicity relationship (MZR) in the Cl0024+1654 galaxy cluster at z~0.4 using full spectrum stellar population synthesis modeling of individual quiescent galaxies. The lower limit of our stellar mass range is M=109.7MM_*=10^{9.7}M_\odot, the lowest galaxy mass at which individual stellar metallicity has been measured beyond the local universe. We report a detection of an evolution of the stellar MZR with observed redshift at 0.037±0.0070.037\pm0.007 dex per Gyr, consistent with the predictions from hydrodynamical simulations. Additionally, we find that the evolution of the stellar MZR with observed redshift can be explained by an evolution of the stellar MZR with their formation time, i.e., when the single stellar population (SSP)-equivalent ages of galaxies are taken into account. This behavior is consistent with stars forming out of gas that also has an MZR with a normalization that decreases with redshift. Lastly, we find that over the observed mass range, the MZR can be described by a linear function with a shallow slope, ([Fe/H](0.16±0.03)logM[Fe/H] \propto (0.16 \pm 0.03) \log M_*). The slope suggests that galaxy feedback, in terms of mass-loading factor, might be mass-independent over the observed mass and redshift range.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures.     Analysis of topographic maps for recreational purposes using decision trees

    pre-printIn this paper we describe a method for predicting the subjective quality of a new mountain bike route for a particular subject based on routes previously ridden and ranked by the subject. GPS tracks of the previously ridden routes are over laid on rasterized topographic maps and topographic features are extracted in the vicinity of the routes using image processing techniques. The subject ranks each previously ridden route segment on four subjective qualities. The extracted topographic features and the subjective rankings are used as input vectors and target vectors to train a series of decision trees. The decision trees are then tested on a series of route segments not used in the decision tree training. The decision trees were able to exactly predict the subjective rankings with over 60% accuracy vs. 20% accuracy for random selection. When close matches are allowed in the prediction of subjective ranking (plus or minus one point vs. actual) the accuracy of the decision trees increased to 90% and above

    Brood Season Habitat Selection by Montezuma Quail in Southeastern Arizona

    Habitat conditions during brood season can affect Montezuma quail (Cyrtonyx montezumae) population levels in Arizona, and land use practices can affect these habitat conditions. General habitat affinities of Montezuma quail are known, however, information on specific habitat selection patterns is limited. We investigated seasonal habitat selection by Montezuma quail in the foothills of the Huachuca and Santa Rita mountains in southeastern Arizona. We used pointing dogs to locate quail during brood seasons (Aug–Oct) of 1998 and 1999. We measured habitat components at 60 flush sites and 60 associated (100 m) random plots. Compared to random plots, quail used areas with higher grass and forb species richness, and more trees (P \u3c 0.10). Low level (\u3c= 50 cm) visual obstruction, usually associated with bunchgrass cover, was greater (P \u3c 0.10) at flush sites than at random plots. Optimum brood season habitat for Montezuma quail should contain \u3e= 6 species of forbs/0.01 ha, tree canopy cover between 10 and 50%, and grass canopy cover between 50 and 85% with a minimum average height of 25cm. Maintaining these habitat characteristics could minimize negative impacts of land-use practices on Montezuma quail

    Challenges in detecting evolutionary forces in language change using diachronic corpora

    Newberry et al. (Detecting evolutionary forces in language change, 'Nature' 551, 2017) tackle an important but difficult problem in linguistics, the testing of selective theories of language change against a null model of drift. Having applied a test from population genetics (the Frequency Increment Test) to a number of relevant examples, they suggest stochasticity has a previously under-appreciated role in language evolution. We replicate their results and find that while the overall observation holds, results produced by this approach on individual time series can be sensitive to how the corpus is organized into temporal segments (binning). Furthermore, we use a large set of simulations in conjunction with binning to systematically explore the range of applicability of the Frequency Increment Test. We conclude that care should be exercised with interpreting results of tests like the Frequency Increment Test on individual series, given the researcher degrees of freedom available when applying the test to corpus data, and fundamental differences between genetic and linguistic data. Our findings have implications for selection testing and temporal binning in general, as well as demonstrating the usefulness of simulations for evaluating methods newly introduced to the field

    Quantifying the dynamics of topical fluctuations in language

    The availability of large diachronic corpora has provided the impetus for a growing body of quantitative research on language evolution and meaning change. The central quantities in this research are token frequencies of linguistic elements in texts, with changes in frequency taken to reflect the popularity or selective fitness of an element. However, corpus frequencies may change for a wide variety of reasons, including purely random sampling effects, or because corpora are composed of contemporary media and fiction texts within which the underlying topics ebb and flow with cultural and socio-political trends. In this work, we introduce a simple model for controlling for topical fluctuations in corpora - the topical-cultural advection model - and demonstrate how it provides a robust baseline of variability in word frequency changes over time. We validate the model on a diachronic corpus spanning two centuries, and a carefully-controlled artificial language change scenario, and then use it to correct for topical fluctuations in historical time series. Finally, we use the model to show that the emergence of new words typically corresponds with the rise of a trending topic. This suggests that some lexical innovations occur due to growing communicative need in a subspace of the lexicon, and that the topical-cultural advection model can be used to quantify this.Comment: Code to run the analyses described in this paper is now available at https://github.com/andreskarjus/topical_cultural_advection_model .
